Actividad 2: Explore a Preserved Mayan Village
Most people know about Pompeii, the city in Italy that was preserved by volcanic ash, making it a great place for archeologists to study the ancient culture that existed there. Other cities around the world suffered a similar fate, such as Herculaneum in Italy and Joya de Cerén. Joya de Cerén. was a pre-Hispanic farming community that was buried under volcanic ash when the Laguna Caldera volcano erupted around 600 C.E. Because the remains of the city are so well preserved, they provide great insight into the daily lives of the Central American populations who worked the land at that time. Because of its great significance, Joya de Cerén is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
In this activity, you will use different search methods to research the time, geography, culture, and context of this pre-Columbian village and write a report on your findings.
